SULA Overflow.....

Most followers of SULA know with look after an average of around 300 dogs at any given time at our shelter...what most followers do not know is that we now have 2 overflow locations.....

These overflow locations are our houses (Mine and Barbaras, and Lisa and Roys) that we have made space to house the dogs with special needs that would not do well at the shelter AND all new mums and puppies. Over the years, we have found that to give new puppies the best start in life and to minimize the risk of early death due to many risks here in Mexico (Destemper and Parvo being 2 that are rife), total isolation is the best option until they have completed the course of 3 vaccines.

So in this blog I wanted to focus on the mums and puppies. This week we have had three new arrivals at our house;

The first a litter of 11 puppies rescued by Lisa and Roy. No more than a day old, these puppies need around the clock attention with bottle feeding every two hours!!! We know that their chances of survival are low, but that does not stop Barbara and Lisa....

The second arrival is a mum-to-be, a beautiful little chi mix who will have her puppies any day now, and because they will be with their mum, they will have a great chance of survival.

The third is a beautiful litter of 7 chi mix puppies that would melt anyone's heart.....

These join the 2 litters already in care at our house (5 puppies in total) and 3 litters at Lisa's house (another 9 puppies)...

So if you do the math that's 32 puppies and 1 mum-to-be....

All of these need cleaning and feeding either 2 or 3 times a day, and given we keep them effectively quarantined, this falls to myself, Barbara and Lisa.

So you may think we are busy when you see us at the shelter, out and about sourcing the provisions for the shelter, (we make and average of 120 kgs or raw food everyday), at the airport, at fundraisers, or just dealing with plethora of messages and request we get everyday....but when we close the doors of our houses then the next round of cleaning, feeding, ect starts over...

This year has been particularly bad in terms of the number of puppies and mums that we have rescued...please, please, please encourage any pet owner that you know to sterilise their pets...
